A Tribute to the North East's Iconic Landscape

A Tribute to the North East's Iconic Landscape

Lucy Pittaway’s newest artwork, Northern Angel, pays tribute to one of the North East’s most recognisable landmarks—the Angel of the North. Set against a sky lit by the northern lights, this piece brings together elements that feel deeply rooted in the region’s identity. The Angel stands tall and proud, surrounded by gentle hills and distant lights that evoke the warmth and familiarity of home.

In creating this piece, Lucy has combined iconic local imagery with a touch of the unexpected. The northern lights, rare to see so vividly here, cast a soft glow over the landscape, bringing a different perspective to a well-loved view. A small flock of sheep adds a simple, homely charm, grounding the scene in the North East’s pastoral life. It’s a view that is both striking and comforting, a piece that captures the feeling of the North East.

Northern Angel will be available to view from Friday, 8th November. The original piece will take pride of place in Lucy Pittaway’s brand-new Newcastle Gallery, opening in Monument Mall on Blackett Street the following week. This gallery will be a new space for art lovers and locals to experience Lucy’s work up close, and Northern Angel is the perfect piece to launch this exciting chapter.

For those who feel a connection to the North East, Northern Angel will resonate on a personal level. The Angel of the North has become more than a sculpture; it’s a symbol of resilience, community, and pride in the region. This artwork captures those values, inviting viewers to reflect on what makes this part of the world so special.

Join us at the Newcastle Gallery to experience Northern Angel in person, alongside a wider collection inspired by the landscapes and spirit of the North. This is a celebration not just of an artwork, but of the place that inspired it.
